Community Notices
Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

Happy New Year Broadbeach families! Welcome to the start of a new school year. Last week, I saw many of our students as they arrived on the first day and, many of you as you made the delivery. It is logical that there was a distinct difference in the behaviour of parents delivering their first child to those whose children are returning and I am pleased, and grateful, to have witnessed some assurances towards our new families from our ‘veterans’. I thank you all for preparing your child for their first day this year. They looked resplendent in their uniforms and, from what I saw at the breaks, their lunches have me tempted to place an order from your households.
With almost a month behind us in 2025, I commend the teams that managed a range of projects that occurred during the break so that our facilities were enhanced in readiness for the return of the students. These projects included:
- External painting Blocks A and B
- Treatment and top dress of the oval
- Replacement of asbestos ceilings from the Family Connect and IT rooms
- Replacement of air conditioners in the James Centre
- Carpet cleaning throughout the school
- Service and cleaning of all air conditioner units
- Installation of awning on Learning Centre 1 to shelter junior boys’ toilet entrance
- Resurfacing of Prep playground.
Numerous weather events during the break left our environment a little dishevelled. I acknowledge and commend our facilities and cleaning teams for ensuring we arrived back to a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.
Our Strategic Plan 2025-2028 that was designed from a range of inputs last year will guide our actions throughout 2025. The priorities include:
- Educational Excellence and Inclusive Practices,
- Digital Innovation
- Innovative Facilities Development
- Community and Administrative Systems and Services
At Broadbeach, our positive reputation has been forged and maintained on the pursuit of excellence for all students through targeted teaching and a clear focus on identified priorities. Our dedicated team members, whose extra commitment has been a hallmark at Broadbeach, returned energised and ready to execute our plans. Their actions embody the sentiments captured in Aristotle’s words, “Excellence is never an accident. It is the result of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution. It represents the wisest option among many alternatives. Choice, not chance determines your destiny, dreams and values”. I commend our team for what they have done and will do again this year, confident 2025 will again be a successful year for all.
There will be some changes in the leadership team for Term 1 as Mr Jenks enjoys some long-service leave. His portfolio has been redistributed across Mrs White, Mr O’Brien and Ms Klarenbeck. To offset these extra duties for our deputy team, Mr Wooldridge and Mr Granger will join the team in a part-time capacity managing student behaviour and curriculum aspects. Both these gentlemen have proven track records and I am confident in the team’s capacity to ensure a smooth start to the year.
Student enrolment population on the eighth day of the year largely dictates the level of resourcing we receive for the year. At the time of writing, we have 1179 students enrolled this year. This is similar to the start of 2024 and represents a small decrease from the total of 1206 enrolled at the end of 2024. Based on the census on Day 8, staffing and budgets will be finalised to ensure we deliver actions towards our annual goals.
At the time of writing the attendance rate was 96.7%. Our annual target is 95% as we understand that students should not attend when they are unfit to do so. I remind you that every day counts when it comes to learning.
I have included some reminders following my section in this newsletter. Your awareness of, and adherence to these will help us all maintain the systems that support our pursuit of order.
In closing this week, I extend my thanks to those of you who have extended best wishes for my final term. Your positive expressions are appreciated.
Stay safe and keep smiling.
Bruce
Reminders:
Social media access is not recommended for primary aged children because, generally, they do not have the emotional maturity required. Misuse sometimes leads to hurtful behaviours for participants and some behaviours online are illegal. If you choose to grant access to your children and you encounter these challenges, seek assistance from the police and the office of the eSafety Commissioner or the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network. If your child requires social and/or emotional support, contact the school to explore access to the Guidance Officer’s services. Details about the management of the school behaviours is captured in the Student Code of Conduct.
Upon arrival at school, students, unaccompanied by their parents, must congregate in the Peace Garden or undercover area, where there will be a staff member supervising from 8:15am. Students should not arrive before this time unless attending before school activities. Students who demonstrate that they cannot meet behaviour expectations at this time will require parental supervision.
Adhering to the protocols relating to the delivery and collection zones on Old Burleigh Road and Mary Avenue enhances safety for all members of our school community.
Students and younger siblings are not permitted to play on the adventure playgrounds before and after school due to Workplace, Health and Safety Regulations.
If your child rides a bike to school, ensure they secure it with a lock.
Please label your child’s belongings to maximise your chances of being reunited with them when they are misplaced.
The Student Resource Scheme payment of $280 is due 4 April. If you are experiencing financial difficulties currently, please contact the finance team to explore payment options.
If your child requires a dentist, a free public service is available by calling 1300 300 850
Safe and respectful school communities
Your child, our student. One team. We all deserve respectful, safe and non-violent environments, so aggression and harassment of any kind - physical, verbal or otherwise - isn't acceptable. When you interact with school staff, remember we're all on the same team to support your child. We all have your child's best interests at heart, and the best way to achieve a positive learning experience is to work together.
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

PREP 2025
Congratulations to all the parents for supporting a smooth transition to school. Although there were a few tears, it was mostly smiles and excited faces, especially in the playground. The children have already made new friends and connected well with their teachers. Our School Prep Transition Program certainly helped with this successful transition and I thank those parents involved. A big thank you to Steph Addley and Caroline Dew for getting to know so many of the children prior to starting school. The support from our Kindergartens has also made a big difference.
The combined experience, organisation and sense of calm from our wonderful Prep Team was reassuring for all.
The teachers are looking forward to getting to know their new students and look forward to the parent information session in Week 3.
If you have missed our information sessions last year or need a reminder, please go to the Broadbeach Website – Enrolments - Prep or have a look at this Summary from our Prep Information Sessions.
Before and After School
Our teachers utilise every minute to be thoroughly prepared for your children prior to opening their doors. Please refrain from entering the building before 8:30 am (even to place your bag at the classroom).
Please refrain from entering the building prior to 3:00 pm. Teachers are doing their best to retain the attention of their students, and once adults are seen from the windows, the children’s focus changes.
Our playgrounds remain out-of-bounds before and after school. We appreciate you observing these state government rules. Please direct your children to the Undercover Area, where there will be staff supervision.
Religious Instruction or Values Lessons
Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are to provide Religious Instruction (RI).
Participation in RI is not compulsory. Students in Years 1-6 will attend either Religious Instruction run by volunteers from a local faith group or Values lessons taught by our class teachers. Lessons will commence from Week Four, Wednesday 19February, and are scheduled for 30-minute sessions every Wednesday.
Students are allocated to RI based on information provided by parents on enrolment. Further information is located on our website under Religious Instruction. If you wish to make a change to this information, please do so in writing at admin@broadbeachss.eq.edu.au
From the Deputy’s Desk – Kristi Klarenbeck
Attendance Matters – Let’s start strong!
Unless too unwell to attend, students are expected to attend school every minute of every day. Broadbeach SS has an attendance goal of 95% or above.
Section 178 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (the Act) states actions can be taken to prosecute parents in breach of their obligation to ensure their school aged child attends school on a regular basis.
Do I need to let the school know if my child has been away from school?
Yes. You must let the school know the reason why your child is absent from school – either beforehand, on the day of the absence, or as soon as practicable after your child’s return to school.
Why do I keep getting an SMS to explain my child’s unexplained absence?
You are receiving this automated SMS because you have not yet explained your child’s absence for the day/s listed in the SMS. Simply log into QParents or reply to the SMS with the reason for the absence and the absence will then be justified and no longer be flagged for an SMS reminder.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for:
- birthdays
- shopping
- visiting family and friends
- if they sleep in
- looking after other children
- minor medical check-ups
Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays where possible.
If you’re having problems getting your child to school for some of these reasons…
- won’t get out of bed in the morning
- won’t go to bed at night
- can’t find their uniform, books, school bag …
- slow to eat breakfast
- haven’t done their homework
- watching TV
- have a test or presentation to do, have an assignment to hand in
- it’s their birthday.
… a set routine can help
- have a set time for devices to be put away
- have a set time to go to bed
- have a set time to get out of bed
- have uniform and school bag ready the night before
- have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
- set a time for daily homework activities
- speak about school positively
- be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term!
What should I do if my child won’t go to school?
You should contact the school as soon as possible for advice and support.

Playgrounds before and after school
Playgrounds are strictly out of bounds before and after school. Workplace Health and Safety protocols are in place permitting the use of playgrounds during school hours only, and only when supervised by staff members. Your cooperation in keeping your child/ren off the playgrounds before and after school is appreciated.
Uniform Policy
A great start to the year. Below are examples of acceptable and unacceptable items of dress at Broadbeach State School. We take great pride in how we present our uniform and expect all students to be dressed according to the P&C endorsed Uniform Policy.

Year 6 Leaders Inspiring Our School Culture
The start of the year is always an exciting time, especially as we see our next generation of leaders begin their journey. While our school has official leadership roles such as School Leaders, Sports Captains, and other key positions, we emphasise the leadership potential of our entire Year 6 cohort.
In the first few days of school, I had the opportunity to meet with our Year 6 students to discuss the meaning of leadership and the expectations we have for them all. We explored how their character and actions can influence our school culture. By collectively striving to be positive role models, our Year 6 students have the power to shape a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone.
Already, we’ve seen remarkable examples of this in action. Some Year 6 students have been assisting younger students who needed help settling back into school, finding their way around, or even navigating language barriers for a few new Prep students from overseas. These moments highlight the important role our Year 6 cohort plays in fostering a welcoming and positive school community.
While we ensure these leadership opportunities do not impact their academic commitments, we encourage this kind of initiative. The key message we’ve shared with Year 6 is that leadership isn’t about being in charge—it’s about inspiring and helping others. I’m excited to see how these young leaders continue to grow and contribute throughout the year.
I look forward to sharing updates as our Year 6 cohort leads the way in building a positive and supportive school culture this year.
Looking ahead, we’ll soon begin the Year 4 to 6 Class Representative selection process. Class Representatives play a vital role in our Student Council, and this process will commence in the coming weeks. Negotiations are underway for a Student Leader Presentation Ceremony to recognise all the official leadership roles, anticipated to take place on Monday 24th February in Week 5 (time to be confirmed).
Upcoming Year 6 Activities
The beginning of the year is always a significant time for our Year 6 students, who step into their final year of primary school. With many activities happening early this term, much of the planning and communication was sent out at the end of last year to ensure families were well-prepared. We understand the tight turnaround at the start of the school year and sincerely appreciate the support of Year 6 families in meeting deadlines to ensure the students could enjoy these exciting and beneficial experiences.
Life Education Sessions
In Week 1, the Year 6 cohort participated in Life Education sessions titled ‘Talk About It!’. Held at school and delivered by highly trained presenters, this program built on its success from last year, where it received glowing feedback from staff, students, and parents. We were pleased to secure it early for 2025. The sessions covered age-appropriate content related to puberty and aligned with the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education. Parents were given the option to opt their child out of the program via an SMS permission sent by the school prior to the holidays and again at the start of Week 1. The program was offered at no cost to families.

Year 6 Camp
In Week 3, it’s time for one of the most anticipated events of the year for our Year 6 students—the Year 6 camp! This year, the camp will take place at a new location, Maroon Outdoor Education Centre. The decision to bring camp forward was made to provide an early opportunity for teachers and students to connect in a fun and supportive environment. It also allows staff to begin fostering and developing the leadership and character qualities we have started focusing on, and will continue to focus on, throughout the year.
Please note that camp payments were due by 31st January, as this timeline is required by the camp to confirm catering and staffing arrangements. If payment has not been made and no payment plan has been established, your child’s place on the camp will regrettably be forfeited.
Details regarding packing lists, departure times, and other important information will be shared early Week 2.

Parent Information Sessions
Our Parent Information Sessions are coming up soon. The dates are as follows:
Week 3 (All sessions start at 3:15pm):
Tuesday 11 February – Prep, Year 3 and Year 5
Wednesday 12 February – Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4
Week 4 (All sessions start at 3:15pm):
Monday 17 February – Year 6 (scheduled later due to camp)
These sessions will be run by class teachers in their classrooms and provide parents with an overview of what’s happening in their child’s class. Please note that these are not parent-teacher interviews and will not focus on individual student progress. Parent-teacher interviews, which provide detailed feedback on student progress, will take place later in Term 1.
We encourage all parents to attend these sessions to gain valuable insights into classroom routines, learning expectations, and planned activities for the year.
From the Special Education Team
Welcome to the 2025 school year.

Early in the term, TLC teachers will begin reaching out to parents and carers around supports available to students with a disability. Please take this opportunity to share what you know about your child with the team, specifically working on goals to support your child to engage and participate in all areas of school life.
Please feel free to contact the Head of Special Education Services if you have any questions or would like to directly share therapeutic or medical reports. cdew13@eq.edu.au

Parenting Tips for Positive Childcare and School Drop-offs
Let’s face it, childcare or school goodbyes can be tough, both on our kids and us. Your child may cling to you at the gate, tugging at your legs and emotional heartstrings as you try to leave.
If this has been your experience, it is common. Some level of separation anxiety is developmentally normal in young children. It can happen when they start care or school for the first time, change centre or school, or move up a level. They could also have a more shy or nervous temperament and need extra support to separate from you.
The extended article has some practical ideas that parents and carers can try to help children cope and settle well, keeping in mind that you know best what might make goodbyes easier.
Strategies include having a special ‘goodbye ritual’ before leaving, comforting and communicating to ease fears, as well as practical ways to maintain a positive attitude, like games and role play.
The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program can help families with raising confident kids, to find out more, visit Triple P Online. If your child is aged six and up, you can help them build resilience through Fear-Less Triple P Online.

Back to School Nerves: How to Start the New Year with Confidence
Coming back to school or beginning at a new school can be an exciting but stressful time for some of our young people. These feelings are normal, especially as children get ready to tackle all the new things that a new year and class bring.
Some practical ways to help kids get back into routine if they’re feeling a bit overwhelmed include:
- Set up for success. Set out uniforms and anything they need the night before during the first few weeks. Be clear on routines and be clear on any changes that may come up. Visuals, check-lists and social stories/picture books can be helpful for kids who need more visual reminders as well and ongoing chats or role plays about new experiences can also be helpful.
- Troubleshoot any real-world anxieties. Talk through any worries that may come up and plan for how to cope. This may be a special item of yours in a pencil case/backpack, a breathing technique, a coping statement, etc. Rewards at the end of the day can also make tackling a big day a bit easier. Reminding children of past challenges they have overcome and your belief in them can help them come into school confident.
- Validate feelings. Speak with your child about how worries about a new year/class are normal and that everyone feels this way. You can do this by: naming the feeling, acknowledging this must be hard for your child (validate) and meet the need through physical comfort, a coping strategy, a pep-talk or anything else that you believe your child needs.
Term 1 is an exciting time but may bring a lot change. Reach out to your teacher if your child is still having trouble adjusting. By working as a team, we can make sure that all students succeed through support and consistency.

All feelings are important – the magical, the messy, and the in-between. Sometimes though, big feelings can have us behaving in ways that aren’t so, let’s say … shiny. This happens to all of us. Senior Polo Shirts

These shirts are available for students in Year 6 only and can be ordered via Flexischools or in person at our Uniform Shop. All sizes are currently in stock, with limited quantities of size 10 (limit of 1 x size 10 per student).
A friendly reminder for parents/carers that the senior shirts do not have the graduation year on them from the uniform shop. However, there is an option available to have the graduating year applied by a school approved provider to the front of the shirt only. This allows families the choice to select an option that best suits their family, makes the senior shirts more accessible for new students during the school year, reduces the wastage from excess stock and unwanted shirts, creates a future second hand option for other families, and also assists our Family Support team.
For those families who would like the option of having the year applied to the front of the senior shirts in 2025, purchase as per usual then take the senior shirt(s) to In2Sports Embroidery to have the year applied. This option will be at an additional cost to you per shirt, this is to be paid directly to In2Sports Embroidery.

Black shorts
As mentioned in previous 2024 newsletters, a decision on a new supplier of black shorts was made during a recent P & C General Meeting. This decision was made by the P & C committee, with input from the school and parents in attendance, resulting in a new improved style of shorts to be introduced midway through 2025. Information will be provided to families via the school newsletter and our Instagram and Facebook pages when these are available to order.
