Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

Pride exuded from our most recent crop of student leaders as they proudly displayed their badges on their chest last Monday. Motivated by the responsibility they have publicly accepted; I expect each of these leaders to apply the appropriate attitudes to represent their peers throughout 2025. I acknowledge Miss Hayman, Mr Granger, Mrs Clark and Mr O’Brien for accepting the role of mentors for these leaders this year.
You will have a chance to meet our new principal, Stephen Josey on Monday 10 March. Stephen will be at Broadbeach for the day as part of his induction and will dedicate the final half-hour of the day to addressing and then chatting with those who wish to meet him. This will be an informal event in the James Centre from 2.30 – 3.00pm. The program for the morning will include a presentation by our leadership team and a chance for Stephen to witness the learning in action across the school.
School is not a child care facility to opt in or out. 90 early departures were processed last week. This is not acceptable. Attendance at school for the full day is an expectation as outlined in the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006. I acknowledge and understand that from time-to-time, emergent circumstances lead to the need to collect early however, this must be the exception not the rule. To meet my accountability, I will be arranging individual meetings with parents of students frequently or regularly collected from school prior to 3pm with the intent of ensuring compliance with the Act. In the interim, reception staff will be providing a letter of expectation to those collecting students early. Your commitment to meeting your accountability is expected and appreciated.
I consider myself fortunate to have the support of a cohesive, dedicated and highly-skilled leadership team. Each member of the team brings a level of expertise in their respective portfolios and provides me clear and precise information to guide my decision-making. During my regular meetings with each member of the leadership team I monitor portfolios, celebrate their successes and provide support and guidance in the pursuit of our goals. Our current leadership team comprises: Deputy Principals: Peta White, Kristi Klarenbeck and Matt O’Brien; Heads of Sub-School: Jodie Kurt, Kirryn Mills, Steph Addley and Di Joske; Associate Deputy Principals: Dan Wooldridge and Ash Granger, Head of Special Educational Services: Caroline Dew; and Guidance Officer: Rachel Wise. To ensure responses to your inquiries are expedited, incoming questions and requests are directed to the leader with the portfolio that closely matches the topic. The confidence I have that we will enjoy a smooth transition as Stephen takes the reins has its genesis in the performance of our leadership team.
Ceilings often come in the form of beliefs and associated statements to limit expectations e.g. “they are only five years old, they can’t… or, aren’t able to…” When we remove ceilings, instil a growth mindset and believe young people can learn, the results are impressive. At Broadbeach, our team work collectively with high expectations of students and themselves and, a deep belief in both students and their abilities to bring about rapid learning progress. This is evident in all classrooms however perhaps most vivid in the Prep rooms where the progress in their first formal year of schooling is amazing. I salute our team for their abilities and attitudes that underpin your child’s success.
Every 3 weeks I conduct tours of the school for prospective families with students in Years 1-6. I am proud to report that for many of the families, their inquiry is based on the reputation of our school and our community. I am grateful to you for the part you play in this reputation.
I look forward to seeing you at the parent-teacher interviews this week.
Stay safe and keep smiling.
Bruce

PREP – VISION SCREENING
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development. A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on 1st, 2nd, 8th, & 9th May to conduct vision screening for children in their prep year.
Further information including consent forms will be sent out to Prep families in the coming weeks.
The following site has useful links to ‘Vision Screening Information for Parents and Caregivers’ + ‘Vision Screening Information for School Staff’. Prep vision screening | Children's Health Queensland
P-2 - Before School:
- If children are here before 8.30am, they need to wait in the allocated, supervised Under Cover Area until the supervising staff send them to their classrooms at 8.30am.
- If you are waiting with your child, they still need to be seated. This will establish a routine for when they are ready to stay in the UCA independently.
P- 2 - After School:
- Thank you for waiting outside the building until the 3.00pm bell. Prep W parents, it is appreciated if you also wait back from the classroom. Once the children see adults in the building they tend to be distracted and will miss crucial teacher instructions.
- A big improvement this week with so many students, independently meeting their families at the Kiss ‘n’ Go or prearranged location.
- Thank you for your understanding and for reminding your child that the playgrounds are out of bounds after school.
From the Deputy’s Desk – Kristi Klarenbeck
Harmony Day
Did you know, Broadbeach State School has students from 49 different countries, speaking 48 different language groups. It is any wonder our Harmony Day celebrations get bigger and better each year. At Broadbeach, we celebrate others cultural differences as ways to learn about the big wide world.
This year, we will celebrate Harmony Day on Friday 21 March, the week before the official event. Some of the activities planned include:
- Opportunity for students to wear their national costume to reflect their country of origin with which their family identifies. A parade of nations will be filmed for display during our Harmony Day assembly.
- Opportunity for students not wearing a national costume reflective of their country of origin to wear ORANGE, the universal colour for Harmony Day. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week, signifying social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
- Whole school assembly recognising our First Nations and international students, sharing of the parade of nations video, student interviews and a cultural dance performance.
Unfortunately, given the sheer size of our student population, we are unable to invite parents to this assembly.
Please note: Harmony Day is not a free dress day.
In the lead up to Harmony Day, classes will be using art as a medium to express their ideas about Harmony Day which will also be displayed during the celebrations.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Information was sent via SMS to families on Monday 17 February to register a time to meet with your child’s teacher.
The Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled in the James Centre for this week as follows:
Tuesday 4 March: Prep – Year Two + 3K (except PM, scheduled in Week 5)
Wednesday 5 March: Year Three (except 3K and 4C)
If you have missed the opportunity to register a time by the cut off, please email your class teacher to arrange a mutually agreeable time to meet.
International Study Tours – school visit
From time to time, Education Queensland International seek out our interest in welcoming international visitors to experience school life on the Gold Coast. This coming Thursday, we have a Japanese student contingent from Kurashiki arriving for a half day visit on Thursday 6 March. We extend gratitude to the Year Four, Five and Six classrooms who will play host for the 3 hour visit. Opportunities to have these visitors are not only beneficial to our students as global citizens, they also inject additional funds to our programs.
DanceXcel
Continues until the end of Week 9. With the exception of Year 3 and Year 6B Troupes who have a catch-up lesson in Week 10. In the event that a class is cancelled due to teacher illness, Week 10 is set aside as a ‘make up’ lesson and will be communicated accordingly.
Term 2 invoices will be released in the coming fortnight. Information about how to register for our Prep DanceXcel program will follow in the upcoming newsletters.
Attendance
In the event that your child is absent, the preferred method of communication is via QParents app, click on Notify Absence. Please advise the absence prior to 8:30am.
In the event that an absence justification hasn’t been received prior to roll call, a follow up SMS will be sent to any unexplained absences requiring attention.
Each Friday, a further follow up SMS will be sent to any families who have outstanding unexplained absences. Your support in ensuring your child’s attendance records are up to date is appreciated.
Before School Routines
Unless a child is registered at PCYC OHSC before school, children are required to sit calmly in the following areas:
Prep – Year Two: Undercover Area
Year Three – Year Six: Peace Garden
Staff supervise these areas from 8.15am. Parents who elect to remain on site before school with their child/ren are asked to keep their child seated with them until students are released for class at 8.30am.
A reminder that playgrounds are strictly out of bounds before and after school. Workplace Health and Safety protocols are in place permitting the use of playgrounds during school hours only, and only when supervised by staff members. Your cooperation in keeping your child/ren off the playgrounds before and after school is appreciated.
Kiss & Go mornings
Thank you to the families who give a smile and a wave as they proceed as far forward in the drop off zones prior to allowing their child/ren to exit the vehicle. As many of you are aware, the backlog of traffic that extends down Alexandra Avenue and Mary Avenue can be extensive. When students exit vehicles at the rear of the line this makes an already congested line, worse.
Please help by following the directions of the staff on duty by;
- driving as far forward in the zone prior to permitting your child/ren to exit,
- having school bags in the car, ready at your child’s feet ready for an efficient exit,
- ensuring adults remain in the vehicle at all times,
- giving kisses and cuddles at home, not out of the vehicle,
- continuing to drive forward in the zone, even after your child has exited the vehicle, avoid crossing over two lanes in an attempt to exit the zone,
- proceeding forward at a safe speed to ensure safety of all in the zone.
Staff are on hand to keep the traffic flowing and to keep students safe. We appreciate your ongoing support and cooperation.
From the Deputy’s Desk – Matt O’Brien

NAPLAN
NAPLAN is fast approaching, and we are now in the final stages of preparation. Some parents/carers have asked about these preparations and how they can support their child.
- Students in Year 3 and 5 received the demonstration site link from their classroom teacher last week. This site allows students to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the online NAPLAN platform.
- At school, students will also practise using the NAPLAN platform in a training environment to ensure they are comfortable with the format.
- Teachers continue to teach as usual, focusing on best practice to support student success. NAPLAN preparation is not about excessive practice but about maintaining our core teaching and learning priorities.
Attached is a Parents and Carers Information Sheet with further details on what your child can expect during NAPLAN testing in 2025.
2025 Student Leader Ceremony
It was fantastic to see so many parents and caregivers attending our Student Leader Ceremony last Monday to support and celebrate our student leaders. On this special occasion, students elected to leadership positions were acknowledged as they proudly walked across the stage to receive their badge and certificate.
A key message shared during the ceremony was that leadership is not about being in charge; it is about taking care of those in your charge. We explored the concepts of inspire and support, highlighting that leadership is not defined by a badge but by our actions and influence on others.
To our newly appointed student leaders, congratulations! I have every confidence in your ability to uphold our school’s values and lead by example. I would also like to extend my gratitude to our special guests: Ms Angie Bell (Federal Member for Moncrieff), Mr Ray Stevens (Member for Mermaid Beach), Mr Nick Marshall (Division 12 Councillor), and Mr Bruce Fox (School Ambassador), for their support on the day.

Math Extension
Did you know that Broadbeach State School offers a Math Excellence program?
This program provides an intellectually stimulating opportunity for students excelling in Mathematics from Years 3 to 6. It is a key part of our classroom differentiation strategy, helping teachers meet the unique needs of each student. Admission to the program is not based on parent requests or applications but rather on data analysis and classroom observations, selecting the top achievers within each cohort. The selection process is led by the Heads of Subschool in consultation with the Classroom Teacher and Extension Teacher.
The program runs once a week for selected students. Its flexible structure allows for seamless transitions in and out of the program, meaning students may participate one term and return to class the next, depending on their progress and evolving needs.
Students chosen for the program must demonstrate consistent proficiency in Mathematics, along with strong independent learning skills and perseverance. The goal is to further develop their mathematical abilities, offering tailored instruction that fosters accelerated growth. This approach ensures a focused learning path while challenging each student’s skills and interests. Additionally, it enhances critical competencies such as creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration—key skills for high-achieving students to excel academically and professionally.
Frequently Asked Questions
If my child is not within the Math Extension program, does this mean they are unable to attain an ‘A’?
Definitely not. All students have the opportunity to achieve an ‘A’. Students are evaluated based on their performance and work related to the units covered in class. Math Extension serves to provide additional challenges for students ensuring there is no limit to their learning potential.
Can I nominate my child for participation in this program?
No, selection for this program is determined through data analysis and classroom observations led by the Head of Subschool in consultation with classroom teacher and extension teacher.
If my child is enrolled in Math Extension, does this mean they will remain in it throughout their time at Broadbeach State School?
No. This program is tailored and dynamic. Students must maintain their academic performance and be within the top performers within the cohort. They need to continue to demonstrate engagement, perseverance, and independent learning skills both in the classroom and within extension sessions.
Does attaining an ‘A’ in mathematics guarantee a place in the program?
No. Selection is based on the student being among the highest achievers within the cohort. Broadbeach State School fosters a culture of high care and high expectations, and there are many high-performing students within the school community.
Can I withdraw my child from Math Extension?
Yes. If you find your child is not enjoying the challenges of math extension or it is impacting their social/emotional well-being, then you may withdraw your child from the program after consulting the classroom teacher.
From the Special Education Team
Hearing plays a vital role in a child’s learning and social development. At our school, we use the Sound Scouts app to help identify potential hearing concerns. If you are worried about your child’s hearing health at any age, a simple hearing screening may help detect a loss, and support is available within our community.
Children with undetected hearing loss often experience language delays. While they may manage well socially up until their middle years of primary school, undetected hearing loss can begin to impact their learning and social interactions.
In all aspects of daily life, children rely on their sense of hearing to play games, follow directions, and communicate with friends. They need to understand idioms, sarcasm, and facial expressions, as well as hear in noisy environments. As children enter adolescence, undiagnosed hearing loss can lead to feelings of isolation, making it harder to form and maintain friendships.
Over time, our understanding of the impact of hearing loss on a child’s development has deepened. Through early identification, intervention, and advancements in technology, language and learning outcomes have improved for children who are hard of hearing. Education Queensland provides support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing through advisory teachers, connections with external services, and in-school assistance. For more information, please feel free to pop into the TLC and speak to Caroline Dew (HOSES)

From the Guidance Officer
Mindfulness
Why Teach Mindfulness to Children?
When we teach mindfulness to kids, we give them the tools they need to build confidence, cope with stress, and relate to uncomfortable or challenging moments. The earlier we do so, the greater the opportunity to help them cultivate resilience and develop and refine their mindfulness practice as they mature. Teaching mindfulness to kids can also help shape three critical skills developed in early childhood: paying attention and remembering information, shifting back and forth between tasks, and behaving appropriately with others. These abilities are known as executive functions and they are essential for more advanced tasks like planning, reasoning, problem-solving, and positive social relationships.
Three Benefits of Mindfulness for Kids:
Studies show that the benefits of mindfulness for kids may include:
- Increased focus, attention, self-control, classroom participation, compassion
- Improved academic performance, ability to resolve conflict, overall well-being
- Decreased levels of stress, depression, anxiety, disruptive behaviour
There are many great apps/websites to practice mindfulness including Smiling Minds and Headspace.
Broadbeach SS has a lunchtime activity every second break in the Dance & Drama room called ‘The Stillness Space,’ where children can engage in mindful activities including colouring and drawing, breathing exercises, reading, etc. If you think your child would benefit from this lunchtime activity, please encourage them to attend.

Important uniform updates
Polo shirts - Size 10
Please note we are currently sold out of size 10 polo shirts. We will advise via the school newsletters and social media pages once these are back in stock. We appreciate your patience during this time.
Changes to formal (checkered) uniform items
Thank you to those families who took up the opportunity offered via the previous school newsletter, and recent social media posts, to attend a P & C Info Session to participate in discussions about the P & C and this school uniform change.
At our recent P & C General Meeting it was proposed that the committee endorse the uniform shop to cease selling the formal (checkered) uniform items, once existing stock has sold out. Some examples of why this was put forward include:
- Decreasing sales and less interest by families for the formal items in recent years, this is reflected daily with a majority of students now wearing the polo option, particularly from year 2 onwards.
- Will improve the day-to-day appearance of the school uniform with all students eventually wearing the same uniform (formal items to continue being part of uniform policy)
- From an operational perspective, it will allow the business unit to operate more efficiently in relation to stock management and long-term sustainability (profits go to supporting our school)
Important:
- A motion to endorse this uniform change will be made at an upcoming P & C meeting.
- The ceasing of selling the formal items will not change the current inclusion of these items in our school uniform policy - this means students can continue to wear any of the formal items they already own or purchase prior to current stock being sold out.
Second Hand Uniform Sale

Well done Broadbeach on a successful morning with over $1400 in sales. All profits from the sale will go directly back to helping support our school.
Thank you to everyone who supported our second-hand sale through donating and purchasing items. Special thanks to Ellysha, Tegan, Jessica, Sasha, Crystal, Suzanne, and Kerrin for kindly volunteering their time organising items and assisting during the sale.
