Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

After more than 40 years of service to school communities across Queensland, Wayne Jenks has decided to retire. Wayne can be justifiably proud of his contributions to public education and for the positive influence he has had on the lives of all members of the school communities within which he has served. There are numerous noteworthy traits that come to mind when I think of Wayne. These include: dedicated, hard-working, ethical, intuitive, positive, solution-focused, driven, professional, invested, sensitive, humorous, curious, socially just, generous, knowledgeable, honest, reliable, helpful, respectful, understanding, persistent, diplomatic and understanding. To isolate a single trait is a risk, however, underpinning all these is care. The care Wayne has for others drives his actions. There are countless members of our community who have been the beneficiary of Wayne’s care and kindness. His compassion, expressed in a multitude of forms, has made a considerable difference; his input has changed lives and continues to do so.
On behalf of our school and the range of settings within which Wayne has served, I salute our friend and colleague and acknowledge his career, a career of the highest order. It has been an honour to serve alongside you Wayne. Please click on the link to read Wayne's Retirement Letter to Parents
In what has been another successful term, our team have again demonstrated their ability to meet and overcome challenges whilst remaining focused on the core business of teaching and learning. I commend each of the team members for the role they played in our success. The platform established through their tenacity will provide a springboard for our strategies for the remainder of the year.
Our P&C AGM was held on 19 March with the election of the 2025 executive members. I extend our collective gratitude to the outgoing executive team: Clare (President), Vanessa (Secretary) and Sanja (Vice president events). They have successfully progressed the business arm and delivered on their intent to deliver events that both, raised funds and connected our community. In thanking these people, I thank their families as I recognise that volunteer roles require time away from them.
Whilst not all executive member roles were filled at the AGM, I welcome three Vice presidents: Sanja, Liesbeth and Dianna, and our secretary, Vanessa. The position of President is likely to be filled soon. The committee would also welcome inquiries regarding the position of treasurer. I look forward to the work that will be led by our new team.
Before I wrap up on the topic of P&C it would be remiss not to acknowledge Clara as the operations manager, Cherie, our tuckshop convener, Ingrid, our uniform convener and assistant tuckshop convener and Helen, Shannon and Rebecca for their work in providing these vital services for our students.
It is evident that Stephen will be well-supported by these teams next term as he takes up the reins.
As the final bell sounds this Friday, so too does my career with the Department of Education. With a fire permit required to light the candles on my birthday cake this year, it’s time to spend time with my family and to rekindle my connection with leisure and sporting pursuits that have taken a back seat.
It has been an honour and privilege to have served Broadbeach State School and, the communities of all the schools and settings in which I have worked for nearly four decades. There are many memories from this time that will form the basis of yarns with friends into the future and, like my fishing tales, I’m certain they’ll be some embellishments.
In my reflection of my time at Broadbeach, I consider myself fortunate to have led a team that embraced the values that I hold dear. I thank them for their loyalty, dedication and commitment and for their tolerance of my foibles along the way. Their unwavering support gave me confidence and fortified my courage to advocate with conviction to bring about the changes required to maintain and extend opportunities for your children.
I wish to close with an expression of gratitude to my family for their contribution to my career in education. My parents, and my siblings, through their modelling and coaching instilled a moral compass that continues to guide my decision-making and a work ethic that provides the drive to pursue goals with tenacity. More recently (the last 37 years) my wife Linda, has been a constant support. Initially, after watching her teach in a Year 2 classroom in Mt Isa in 1988, I was inspired to emulate what I witnessed in her craft, especially, the development of connections with her students. Since then, she has provided a sounding board and has been the source of motivation when challenges arose. You could accurately deduce that the Department of Education have been fortunate to have a two-for-one deal with my principal roles as Linda has always been part of the picture. Her presence in my life has defined my identity both personally and professionally and shaped my purpose. I hope she is ready to share every minute of every day from now on with me 😉. I also acknowledge our children, Patrick and Tiahne, as they too had to ‘share’ me with several thousand other children. They have been patient with me throughout their upbringing as we strived to strike a balance between their worlds of sport and recreation and, the time I dedicated to serving the school communities.
As I stated when I made the announcement of my retirement, I have confidence that “Team Broadie” will continue to deliver on our vision of excellence for all and I look forward to learning about, and celebrating, your future successes from afar.
Stay safe and keep smiling.
Bruce

Assessment
Thank you for your support in the past few weeks leading up to and during our NAPLAN and summative assessment period. Walking through classrooms and witnessing the calm, supportive environments has reinforced my confidence that students were able to demonstrate their true abilities. Many students shared that they prioritised a good night’s sleep before their assessments, and several were proud to tell me about the extra effort they put in to prepare, driven by their determination to succeed.
A few year levels still have final assessments scheduled for Week 10, primarily due to NAPLAN clashes. As a school, we remain focused right up until the holidays, making attendance essential. I have no doubt that this collective hard work will ensure our students enjoy a well-earned break.

Student Council
The Student Council for 2025 is made up of committed Year 3 to 6 students who are eager to support their peers and provide a strong student voice within our school. These students have stepped up to take on leadership roles, ensuring that student perspectives are heard and that they play an active role in enhancing school life.
Their first major initiative will be supporting our ANZAC Ceremony in Week 1 of Term 2. In the lead-up to this significant event, the Student Council will be selling poppies and ANZAC badges before school. These items can be worn at our ceremony on Thursday of that week as a mark of respect and remembrance. Details about the times and locations for purchasing poppies and badges will be shared closer to the end of term.
We look forward to seeing the positive impact our Student Council will have throughout the year, supporting events and initiatives that help our students better understand and engage with the world around them.

Visitors
In the final week of Term 1, we will welcome visitors from Otumoetai Primary School in New Zealand. Their Principal and Deputy Principal are eager to observe our teaching practices and school structure, following positive feedback from visitors in 2024.
Schools both nationally and internationally are keen to learn about our journey in implementing and excelling in structured Literacy and Numeracy. Key areas of interest include our daily timetabling, curriculum coverage, assessment practices, student engagement techniques and the impact of structured programs on our outstanding data.
For Broadbeach, this visit presents a valuable opportunity to engage in professional discussions, share best practices, and highlight the unique aspects of our school. Sharing our narrative allows us to reflect on our approaches, while also gaining insights from others that may inspire further innovation. We look forward to showcasing our school and the Broadie way, of which we are so proud.

From the Special Education Team
An Inclusive Learning Environment
At Broadbeach State School, we are committed to fostering a sense of belonging and safety for everyone in our community—students, staff, and families alike.
One of the greatest challenges for teachers is meeting the diverse needs of every student in their classroom. To support students with disabilities, we adopt a team-based approach that includes parents, Special Education staff, the Administration Team, and most importantly, the classroom teacher.
This collaborative effort ensures that students with disabilities are recognised as diverse learners. By acknowledging their individual needs, classroom teachers can design curriculum opportunities that engage students through meaningful learning experiences, ultimately promoting academic success.
We understand that not all children will learn at the same pace or achieve identical goals as their peers.
With thoughtful planning, reasonable adjustments can be made to ensure all students can participate fully in their education.
In our inclusive environment, every student is encouraged to learn at their own pace, focus on their interests, and achieve personal goals. We believe that all students are capable of success—academically, socially, and personally. Most importantly, every student is valued as a learner and given the opportunity to thrive.

Understanding Anxiety in Children: A Guide for Parents
Anxiety is a natural response to stress or danger, characterised by feelings of worry, apprehension or fear. In children, occasional anxiety is a typical part of development. However, when these feelings become persistent, overwhelming, or interfere with daily activities, it may indicate an anxiety disorder.
Recognizing Anxiety in Children
Children may not always have the words to express their anxious feelings. As a parent, you might observe signs such as:
- Physical complaints: Frequent headaches or stomach aches without a medical cause.
- Sleep disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or frequent nightmares.
- Avoidance behaviours: Reluctance or refusal to participate in activities they previously enjoyed.
- Excessive worry: Constant concerns about various aspects of their life, such as school, friendships, or family matters.
- Restlessness or irritability: Difficulty concentrating, being easily startled, or exhibiting outbursts of anger.
Strategies to Support Anxious Behaviours in Children
- Open communication: encourage your child to talk about their worries. Listen actively and validate their feelings, letting them know it’s okay to feel anxious sometimes.
- Model healthy coping mechanisms: demonstrate positive ways to handle stress, such as deep breathing, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and using positive self-talk. Children learn a lot by observing their parents’ behaviours.
- Gradual exposure: gently encourage your child where appropriate to face situations that may cause anxiety, starting with less intimidating scenarios and gradually progressing.
- Establish predictable routines: consistency can provide a sense of security. Try to maintain regular schedules for meals, homework, and bedtime.
- Teach relaxation techniques: Introduce simple relaxation methods such as deep breathing and mindfulness exercises to help your child manage stress.
- Set realistic expectations: Help your child set achievable goals and break down tasks into manageable steps to prevent feelings of being overwhelmed.
- Contact your school to ensure your child’s teacher is aware of any concerns.
When to Seek Professional Help
While parental support is crucial, there are times when professional assistance is necessary. Consider seeking help if:
- Your child’s anxiety is persistent and doesn’t seem to improve with your support.
- Anxiety significantly interferes with your child’s daily life, including school performance or attendance, social interactions, or family relationships.
Support Organisations
If you believe your child may benefit from professional support, the following resources are available in Queensland for your consideration:
- Child and Youth Mental Health Services (CYMHS)
- Kids Helpline: A free, confidential 24/7 online and phone counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25.
- Parentline: Provides counselling and support for parents and carers.
- Triple P – Positive Parenting Program: Offers evidence-based parenting strategies to help manage childhood anxiety and promote resilience. The Fear-Less Triple P program is specifically designed for parents of anxious children.
- Headspace: Provides mental health support for young people aged 12 to 25, including counselling and online resources.
- Head to health: Provides mental health support for young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns, including counselling and online resources.
- There are also many private psychologists available and generally require a referral from your GP.
Remember, seeking help is a proactive step towards supporting your child’s mental health. Early intervention can make a significant difference in managing anxiety and improving your child’s overall well-being.

Important uniform updates
Formal uniform changes
At our recent P & C Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 19 March it was endorsed by the school’s P & C Committee that the school’s formal (checkered) uniform items will be discontinued in 2025. As mentioned in previous newsletters, meetings, and info sessions, this proposal was put forward to the committee for a variety of reasons such as decreasing sales in recent years, a more consistent daily aesthetic in uniform appearance, and more efficient management of stock for the Uniform Shop to name a few.
Important: The discontinuation of the formal items will not change the current inclusion of these items in our school uniform policy. This means students can continue to wear any of the formal items they already own or purchase prior to current stock being sold out.
Polo shirts - Size 10
Please note we are still awaiting the delivery of more size 10 polo shirts. We will advise via the school newsletters and social media pages once these are back in stock. We appreciate your patience during this time.

Merrimac State High School

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.

Are You A Parent of a Child Between 0 to 12 Years Old?
Researchers from the University of Southern Queensland and The University of Queensland, are conducting research into parents’ opinions about parenting and climate change.
