Community Notices
Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

I trust that you have had an enjoyable and restful holiday and come back ready for Term 2. For me personally it certainly has been a big month or so as I finished my time at my previous school of seven years in preparation of becoming the next Principal of Broadbeach State School and what a privilege it is.
Thank you to staff, students and parents for your warm welcome to the Broadbeach community. I look forward to getting to know people as I develop a deep understanding of what it means to be a member of this community.
ANZAC and Easter
April is a significant and reflective time for many as we seek to commemorate Easter and ANZAC day. Both events have common themes:
Sacrifice and Remembrance
At the heart of both Easter and ANZAC Day is the idea of sacrifice. Of another person laying down their lives for someone else, in many cases someone that they don’t even know.
Ceremony and Reflection
Easter and ANZAC Day also provide times for us to stop and reflect on what we have, who we are and how we can ensure that the opportunities of the following year are fruitful and utilised.
Hope and Renewal
Though sombre in nature, both events ultimately offer messages of hope. Easter celebrates the resurrection—a symbol of new life, renewal, and the triumph of love over death. ANZAC Day, while honouring the past, also looks to the future. It inspires a spirit of resilience, courage, and unity that continues to shape our national identity.
Whether it's families attending Easter services together, having a great family gathering by the beach or school students participating in ANZAC Day assemblies and marches, both events play a key role in fostering intergenerational understanding and respect. They remind us of the importance of community, learning from others and realising that the world and life are bigger than the individual.
Broadbeach ANZAC Service
I had the privilege of attending the Broadbeach State School ANZAC service on Thursday afternoon in the James centre. It was an inspirational service, I was also very proud of our 1100 plus students demonstrating respect throughout the assembly.
P and C
At the time of writing our P & C is still looking for a treasurer and a president. We have four Vice Presidents, so there are plenty of people to provide support.
The P & C assist the principal and the school by:
- Engaging families and students in activities to build community
- Providing feedback on school policy and procedures
- Raising funds to support school initiatives
- Supporting the Principal to implement the school’s strategic plan.
The best P & C representatives that I have worked with in the past:
- Are supportive of the Principal and teachers
- Put all students first and not just their own
- Do not have a personal agenda
- Are efficient and a have diverse set of skills.
As I begin my new role as Principal, this is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join me in working closely to further engage with and strengthen the Broadbeach State School community. All interested parents can apply, however, it would be great to have a President from the younger year levels. The best treasurer is usually someone with a finance, accounting or bookkeeping background that can oversee the books and ensure accountability and compliance.
Have a great week,
See you near the beach!
Stephen Josey
Principal.
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

The theme for this year is Unleashing Scientific Thinking through Play. The focus is to facilitate hands on play, craft and movement... with some extra fun thrown in from external organisations.
Arts Gala 2025
We are excited to announce that the Broadbeach SS Arts Gala will be back in 2025, held at The Star Theatre, 5.30pm on Friday 7 November 2025. More information to follow in Term 3.
Choral Music - Fanfare
On Friday 30 May all three of our choral groups will perform at the biannual Fanfare at Merrimac State School. Letters will be sent home shortly.
Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In Term 2, students in Years 4 to Year 6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
Attendance
In the event that your child is absent, the preferred method of communication is via QParents App, click on Notify Absence. Please advise of the absence prior to 8.30am.
In the event that an absence justification hasn’t been received prior to roll call, a follow up SMS will be sent to any unexplained absences requiring attention.
Each Friday, a further follow up SMS will be sent to any families who have outstanding unexplained absences. Your support in ensuring your child’s attendance records are up to date is appreciated.
Lost Property
All named items have been returned to classrooms. If you are still missing an item belonging to you, PLEASE check and collect from the LOST PROPERTY STORE. There are many items without names. Lost property is located in the undercover area near the peace garden. If you do not find your lost item please keep checking, as your item may go to another home then return a week later.
At the end of Term 2 any remaining items will be donated to charity.
Most importantly – PLEASE NAME YOUR BELONGINGS.

From the Deputy’s Desk – Matt O’Brien
Welcome back to an exciting Term 2!
Our students are diving into a range of engaging units across the school. Assessment Week will take place in Week 8 (9–13 June). The final two weeks of the term will be packed with exciting events, including our school sport carnivals, Senior School Sport Gala Days, the Aladdin Musical, and Music Camp.
Please remember—every day counts, so consistent attendance through to the end of term is vital.
Here’s a snapshot of some of the topics students will be exploring within class this term:
Prep | Properties of Material (Rubbish Monsters), completing their first official writing (sentences), Mothers Day Afternoon |
Year 1 | Animals (Information Reports), Flip Books, Properties of Materials |
Year 2 | Soil and water (Composting), Descriptive paragraphs using senses |
Year 3 | Narratives, Australian Native Animals (Wild Rangers visit), Anzacs |
Year 4 | Rules and laws, plants biological, Willie Wonka writing an extra chapter |
Year 5 | Matter matters (solids, liquids, gas), World Geography – Map reading / describing data, Changing traditional Australian poems into narratives |
Year 6 | Letter writing and the past, Electricity, Australia and Asia (demographic, social and economic characteristics) |
Data Meetings
Over the next two weeks, all classroom teachers will be engaging in class data meetings with their Head of School. These meetings are an important part of our ongoing cycle of reflection and improvement. They provide a dedicated time for staff to analyse student data and discuss individual progress—not just academically, but also in terms of behaviour, learning engagement, and wellbeing.
By closely examining where each student is at, we can make informed decisions about the best next steps. Whether a child needs extra support, enrichment opportunities, or adjustments to help them stay engaged and connected, these meetings help us tailor our approach to meet those needs.
We are proud of the way our teachers know their students and are continually striving to offer a learning environment where every child can succeed.
Student Teachers
We welcome a number of student teachers to Broadbeach State School in the coming weeks as they complete their teaching practicums.
Hosting student teachers is a wonderful opportunity for our school community. It allows our dedicated teachers to share their expertise and mentor the next generation of educators, showcasing the high-quality teaching and learning that happens every day at Broadbeach. It also provides a valuable chance for student teachers to experience life in a vibrant, supportive school environment and learn from some of the best in the profession.
An added benefit is the extra support these future teachers bring to the classroom. Their presence allows for more support and differentiated learning opportunities, which is a win for our students.
Please join us in warmly welcoming our student teachers and supporting them as they take this exciting step in their journey towards becoming outstanding educators.
Somerset Storyfest
At the end of Term 1, a group of outstanding Year 5 and 6 students were recognised for their exceptional effort and engagement in class with a special excursion to the Somerset Storyfest.
This exciting opportunity formed part of our Deputy Principal Incentive Program, celebrating students who consistently demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to their learning. Held at Somerset College, Storyfest is a celebration of storytelling and creativity, bringing together authors, illustrators, and young readers from across the region.
Our students had the chance to attend two engaging author talks, with a standout favourite being Nathan Luff. With his infectious humour and down-to-earth storytelling, Nathan had the whole audience in stitches as he shared hilarious tales from his childhood growing up on a farm with his two brothers. From unexpected visits from a random pelican to falling out of trees and inventing wild backyard games like the Stick Game, Rock Game, and the ever-popular Cow Poo Game (all with suspiciously similar rules!), students were captivated by how these quirky experiences have inspired Nathan’s writing.
It was a fantastic day filled with laughter, inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the joy of storytelling. Congratulations again to the students who earned their place on this excursion—you represented Broadbeach beautifully!
From the Special Education Team
Each week, teachers receive requests from paediatricians and therapists to complete questionnaires. We understand that the school’s perspective is valuable and strive to complete and return these questionnaires within a two-week timeframe.
When making these requests, please keep the following in mind:
- A Consent to Share Information with Third Parties form must be completed by the requesting parent and returned to the school prior to the questionnaire being completed.
- Teachers are not able to complete questionnaires via direct online links. Due to privacy regulations, all questionnaires must be sent to the teacher or Guidance Officer as a PDF attachment or in hard copy.
Completed questionnaires will be returned directly to the requesting medical practitioner.

Managing Big Emotions: Triple P Parenting Tips
Children experience a range of emotions as they grow and learn. Sometimes, tantrums or aggressive behaviour are a way to express strong feelings like frustration or anger.
It’s helpful to know tantrums are a normal and expected part of a young child's development. As the emotional centre of their brain develops, they may react intensely when things don't go as they want or expect.
Dealing with aggressive behaviour is a common challenge for parents and carers too, as children learn to communicate their needs, express themselves, and get along with others.
It can help to teach kids about feelings, notice and encourage their positive behaviour, and set a calm and consistent example.
Although it's normal to raise your voice occasionally, getting angry or yelling can escalate a situation. It can also teach kids that yelling is appropriate, or create a cycle where getting children to cooperate becomes increasingly tricky.
Calmness is a parenting superpower. It can diffuse difficult situations and help children learn important life skills like self-regulation. Keeping a check on your emotional response and managing your stress can make a positive difference.
To learn more, read Triple P's helpful articles on tantrums, children's aggression and yelling.
The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program® can help you handle the ups and downs of parenting more calmly and confidently.

From the Psychologist
Connection Before Correction
Children need emotional connection before they can manage behaviour. Connection builds safety, and safety opens the door to reflection and change. When things are tough, children will not often be able to regulate their emotions unless they feel safe and have strong relationships that they know they can depend on. Ways to maintain connection include:
- Co-Regulation
Regulated adults help dysregulated children. Model calm openly: "I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, I’m going to take a deep breath and get a warm drink before we keep talking, would you like one as well?" - Be with Them
Healing happens in mutual, emotionally-attuned relationships. It’s not just about how children feel—it's about being felt with and knowing you are there with them. - Repair Over Perfection
Ruptures are inevitable. Repair is essential. Apologise. Reconnect. Show that relationships can withstand difficulty. - Safety isn’t just the absence of danger—it’s the presence of attunement.
When a child’s internal world is met with curiosity, not judgment—when their behaviour is met with understanding, not punishment—something powerful happens: They begin to soften. Their shame begins to shrink. Family members start becoming curious about each other’s inner life, not just the outward behaviours. And that shared understanding is where safety begins. - Non-Judgemental Curiosity
Approach each moment with the genuine intention to understand. Your words, facial expression, tone, and body posture should all say: “I’m interested in you, and I’m not here to judge.” Stay curious about the child’s thoughts, feelings, intentions, beliefs, desires, and needs. Let them know their perspective is safe with you.
If you would like to learn more about attachment and parenting, local community centres such as the Oxenford Coomera Community Youth Centre, Griffith University and Studio Village Community Centre regularly offer parenting groups. You can also contact Parentline on 1800 30 1300 for free and confidential parenting advice.

P & C Uniform Shop
Important uniform updates
Formal uniform changes
At our recent P & C Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 19 March it was endorsed by the school’s P & C Committee that the school’s formal (checkered) uniform items will be discontinued in 2025. As mentioned in previous newsletters, meetings, and info sessions, this proposal was put forward to the committee for a variety of reasons such as decreasing sales in recent years, a more consistent daily aesthetic in uniform appearance, and more efficient management of stock for the Uniform Shop to name a few.
Important: The discontinuation of the formal items will not change the current inclusion of these items in our school uniform policy. This means students can continue to wear any of the formal items they already own or purchase prior to current stock being sold out.
Polo shirts - Size 10
Please note we are still awaiting the delivery of more size 10 polo shirts. We will advise via the school newsletters and social media pages once these are back in stock. We appreciate your patience during this time.

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.
