Community Notices
Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

It has been a challenge settling into routines with the public holidays over the past three weeks. I am not complaining, as I love a long weekend, but it certainly has proven a challenge to find that rhythm that the school term often affords us. You may have found a similar experience on the home front with your children. Good routines at home and at school set children up for success.
Please remember that everyday counts, and it is an expectation that students are at school and on time each day unless they are unwell or have another valid reason.
Mother’s Day
I would like to wish all mothers in our community a very special Mother’s Day. May you have had some time to rest and spend with your family.
Community and problem solving
If you have any issues throughout the year your first port of call is your child’s classroom teacher. If you have further concerns after approaching the classroom teacher, then you can contact my team through the email admin@broadbeachss.ed.edu.au. Your message would then be directed to the appropriate person to assist you.
While my team and I work very hard to ensure that all students are safe and parents are happy, sometimes issues do arise. I ask that parents please approach myself and staff in a professional and respectful manner and refrain from using social media as a platform to undermine and disparage individuals or the school. It is important to remember that we are all accountable for what we put out into the public sphere.
Parking around the school
Our lovely school position right next to the beach, helps to make our school have a small community feel, even though we are a big school. The downside to this is the challenges to parking, particularly in the afternoons.
The best solution is ensuring that we all always obey the parking and road rules around the school.
We can do this by:
- Driving in a safe and careful manner.
- Adhering to speed limits.
- Parking in legal spaces and not on the yellow lines or up on embankments.
- Being courteous and patient.
- Following the Kiss ‘n’ Go Protocols, see link below.
- Kiss ‘n’ Go Protocols
The safety of our students and community is everyone’s responsibility. From time to time the council and or police may monitor driver behaviour.
QASSP Conference
This week I will be in Brisbane attending the Queensland Association of State School Principal’s (QASSP) conference. I will be at school Monday morning and will return on Thursday.
Have a great week,
See you near the beach!

Uniform
Broadbeach SS takes great pride in the presentation of students in full school uniform. Breaches of our Uniform Policy can be abolished with parental support. The following may serve as reminders for parents to keep an eye out for prior to your child leaving the house:
- Plain black sneakers
- Plain white socks
- Plain black shorts/skirt/skorts of similar style and length as school purchased items. Bike pants / running shorts do not meet school uniform criteria.
- No makeup (including mascara or foundation).
- Pair of studs or sleepers only (decorative jewellery not permitted). Hoop earrings pose a WHS issue and dangly earrings are considered decorative.
- Watch permitted, however, any ‘smart’ feature to be disabled during school hours.
- Hair to be tied up.
- Non-uniform items must not contain logos (e.g. black jumpers/pants must not have white/colour strips or logos pertaining to branding other than school uniform).

Year 3 will be getting a visit from ‘Wildlife Rangers’ as part of their Science Unit about classifying animals. Students will view and touch animals as well as discuss physical features and behaviours. We can’t wait for this incursion! See timetable for dates and times.

Supporting Every Learner Through Differentiation
Student engagement is a priority in every classroom at our school. We know that students are more motivated to learn when the content is meaningful and accessible to them. That’s why our teachers use a range of strategies to tailor learning experiences to meet the needs of individual students (referred to as differentiation).
The learners at our school are supported through many differentiated and inclusive strategies. We emphasise that there is no 'ceiling' for our top learners, providing ample opportunities for challenge and growth. At the same time, we offer extensive support for our lower-level learners. We do this for all our learners by targeting instruction to their developmental level while respecting their age, stage of schooling, and diverse needs, including those from non-English backgrounds and those with special needs and disabilities.
This approach begins with teachers understanding their students and identifying effective ways to engage them with the content. Strategies may include seating arrangements, peer tutoring, flexible targeted groupings (within class or across year level), adjusting instructional and CFU (Check for Understanding) time, scaffolding tasks, varying the difficulty of independent practice, and using concrete materials or assistive technology. The list goes on.
For students requiring additional support, our Tier 2 and 3 interventions provide small group and individualised assistance.
Any specific adjustments or strategies used for a student are recorded in their Personalised Learning Plan (PLP) and are communicated with parents. This documentation is essential, as it follows the student through their learning journey and supports continuity of support from one year to the next. It also ensures that we continue to meet the changing educational needs of all students as they grow.
We are committed to working in partnership with families to provide the best possible learning environment for every child.
Student Council Recognition
With ANZAC Day now behind us, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our Student Council. Despite the short turnaround (our assembly was held on just the third day back) this committed group of students took on the responsibility of organising and selling poppies and badges across the school.
It was fantastic to see them developing their leadership, communication, and organisational skills through this initiative. They upheld their roles with maturity and dedication, and I thank them for their time and effort. I hope they found the experience both meaningful and rewarding.
For the record, the Student Council sold an incredible 800 poppies!
There are more Student Council initiatives on the horizon, and we look forward to their continued role in representing student voice across our school.

Year 6 and Prep Buddy Reading Begins!
We’re excited to share that our Year 6 and Prep Buddy Reading program is now underway for 2025! Each Friday morning, our Year 6 students partner with a Prep buddy to enjoy reading together, building strong connections across the school.
This program offers wonderful benefits for both age groups. Our Prep students develop confidence in reading, listening, and communication, while our Year 6 students build leadership skills, empathy, and a sense of responsibility. It’s always a joy to see the excitement and engagement on both sides during these sessions.
We’re proud of how our senior students have embraced this opportunity to support our youngest learners—and we look forward to seeing these buddy partnerships grow each week.
From the Special Education Team
This semester, we are launching a new round of Community Access Programs. Students supported by the Targeted Learning Centre will have the opportunity to participate in the following:
SEP Gymnastics Program – This program is designed to enhance muscle movement and develop foundational gymnastics skills, including balance, flexibility, and gross motor control. Throughout the sessions, students also practice social language skills to communicate effectively with the coaching team.

Bounce – Bounce focuses on building students’ strength and balance, while also helping them develop the ability to listen, wait, and follow movement sequences. The program aims to foster resilience, persistence, social engagement, self-control, and teamwork.

The Men’s Shed – This program offers students a unique opportunity to work in a fully equipped carpentry workshop. Guided by experienced volunteers, students use both hand and power tools to create a wooden project.

Family Routines
Family routines can help families organise themselves to get things done and spend valuable and enjoyable time together. Routines also let your children know what’s important to your family and can strengthen your shared beliefs and values and assist in building a sense of belonging and togetherness in your family.
Routines can be good for children for several reasons.
- Safety, belonging and relationships
Routines can be part of an organised and predictable home environment, which helps children feel secure, safe and looked after. This predictability can help children cope during development changes or life events like the birth of a new child, house move, etc. Also, routines built around having fun or spending time together foster a sense of belonging and strengthen family relationships. For example, your routine might include things like reading a story together before bed each night or sharing regular family meals. - Skills and responsibility
Having chores as part of family routines helps children develop a sense of responsibility and some basic skills like time management. These are skills children can use for life which will over time, increase their independency. - Health and wellbeing
Routines can help younger children to learn healthy habits, like brushing their teeth, doing physical activity, etc. Also, routines can reduce stress which can help them to feel less anxious or sad during difficult times.
It is important to note though, it can be easy to overschedule family life. Routines have many benefits, but it’s also good for children and parents to have free time to play, relax or be creative.

Book Review
The Library Mouse by Frances Tosdevin
A little mouse who lives in a library is encouraged by his spider friend to not give up on his dream of becoming a writer. Quill, the mouse, is a dreamer! He longs to write stories and share them with children in his beloved library. But getting his words noticed seems impossible for such a small creature. Can he and his spider friend, Leggsy, find a way to make his voice stand out from the crowd - or will Quill's stories remain forever unheard?

Dear parents and Caregivers,
We currently have a large quantity of readers and overdue library books missing from our shelves…
Please look around at home and RETURN any READERS or LIBRARY BOOKS you may have.

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.
