Community Notices
Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

My personal experience over my first 13 weeks as Principal of Broadbeach State School is that events and opportunities are frequent, well planned and high quality. The past two weeks are no exception with 100 days of Prep, NAIDOC week, Shujitsu visit, Taiwanese teacher visit and somehow the team managed to celebrate Primary Principal’s Day on Friday! All of these events and opportunities don’t happen without the commitment and professionalism of our teachers and staff.
On that topic, can I please extend a warm thank you to the teachers, students and parents who went out of their way to wish me a happy Primary Principal’s Day on Friday. My heart was warmed and my enthusiasm for my profession multiplied. I am truly blessed to be a part of this community.
School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 22 August 2025. All families, school staff and students in target year levels 5 & 6 will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey has been emailed to one parent/caregiver per family. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Shujitsu Visit
Past friendships rekindled, new friendships forged, connections and learning beyond any curriculum can offer. Our relationship with Shujitsu elementary began over 5 years ago and has provided opportunities for many of our families and Shujitsu families. I have heard stories this week of families still connecting well beyond their time at Broadbeach.
This year we sent 34 students and 9 staff members to Japan over the recent holidays and this week Shujitsu arrived with 35 students and 5 staff members to have a rich Gold Coast experience with us.
Planning for the 2026 programme has already begun, a would like to extend a big thank you to Ms Klarenbeck, Mrs Adderley and the many staff involved in making this happen.
Goodbye to our friends from Shujitsu, this is not farewell but rather - see you later!
NAIDOC Week
Our Broadbeach community was blessed this week by a dedicated team of staff who put together a great week of celebrations.
On behalf of the Broadbeach State School I extend a very warm thank you to:
- Aunty Justine Dillon – Traditional Custodian of Kombumerri country
- Ngarang-Wal Dance Group (knee gar rung well)
- Karem Bau Torres Strait Islander Dance Group
- Our First Nations parents, families, teachers and Jarjums (students) that live, work and learn at Broadbeach State School on Kombummeri country.
- Our Indigenous Champions and NAIDOC team.
Taiwanese visit
A big thank you to Mr O’Brien who coordinated the Griffith University and EQI Taiwanese teacher visit to our school this week. Our guests were treated to an informative presentation and follow up classroom visits.
Uniform Policy
Thank you to parents for supporting the Uniform policy. Remember that socks are all white, shoes are all black and earrings need to be gold or silver sleepers or studs.
Communication
I have sent out some correspondence this week regarding Wednesday. I anticipate the need for more in the coming days. Could families please ensure that your details are up to date so that you can receive the newsletter and key communication through email and SMS as the need arises.
But wait! There’s more
Monday this week we have the Brisbane Bullets visiting our school to promote basketball and connect with some of our Year 5 and Year 6 basketball talent. On Thursday we have a contingent of Japanese teachers coming to visit our school and hear about all the learning opportunities that we offer at Broadbeach through our targeted teaching pedagogical approach.
See you near the beach!

Book Week 2025 – ‘Book an Adventure’
The Children’s Book Council of Australia celebrate book week every year. This year’s theme is ‘Book an Adventure’ and their focus for celebration is 16-23 August.
Broadbeach State School will celebrate Book Week on Thursday 18 September.
We encourage all students to dress-up as their favourite book character. Following the theme ‘Book an Adventure’ is encouraged but not essential. To help identify the character, your child can carry the book or attach a picture of the book to their costume. Sometimes our older students get together with friends to represent several characters from the one book. The teachers are very excited and are already planning their costumes.
We will host a parade on the oval from 9.00 am to show-off the costumes. We invite parents and family members to come along and enjoy this fun community occasion.

Celebrating 100 Days of Prep
Our Prep students had a fun week, celebrating their 100 days of Prep. The teachers planned interesting activities and ensured the occasion was marked with fun and fanfare. The Friday disco was a big hit. If you haven’t already, visit the P&C socials to see some of the fun.
Prep Sports Day – Take 3 - Monday 15 September
Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this time. Being Sports Day, remember the children can dress in their house colours. We look forward to seeing parents, grandparents and significant family members ready to cheer them on and join in the fun.
Enrol your child for Prep 2026
- We look forward to helping you and your child to be ‘school ready’
- To be eligible you must be living within our school catchment area (evidence required).
- Enrolment packs are available at the office, or by completing the enrolment enquiry form.
- Further information regarding Prep can be found on our Prep page on our website.
If you know of any other family that has a child due to start Prep, please share this information.
Prep Experience Days are being planned for Term 4. Students MUST be enrolled to attend.

School Opinion Survey 2025
The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinions about our school from families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11). The surveys will help identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. The survey invitation has been emailed and is titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025.
Each school family has received one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey. The survey is anonymous, and the results are reported in ways that an individual’s response can be identified by the school.
Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with an internet connection.
For Parents/Caregivers who do not have access to the internet school computers/tablets will be available. Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
It is important that as many parents/caregivers as possible complete the survey so we can get a well-rounded data source.
Shujitsu Elementary School
Following a fast-paced yet enjoyable trip to Broadbeach State School, we farewelled our Japanese sister school, Shujitsu Elementary School bright and early on Monday morning.
Interested in finding out more about the Nihon ni Ikimashou Study Tour for a future Year 6 student? Stay tuned for information in the coming weeks for the parent information evening and how to express your interest for your child to be considered.

Student Council News
As has been previously communicated, a new initiative led by our passionate Student Council has started. It is our very own Recycling Can Program!
With support from the P&C, our Student Council has launched a program to collect eligible cans and bottles purchased from our school canteen. These containers will be recycled through the Containers for Change program, and all funds raised will go directly into the Student Council fund to support student-led projects.
Please note:
- Only cans and bottles purchased at school should be brought in for recycling.
- If you would like to support from home, we encourage you to recycle using the P&C’s QR code by yourself. All funds raised this way will still contribute to the Student Council fund.
- We kindly ask that no additional rubbish or recyclables from home be brought to school to help us keep our grounds clean and manageable.
This initiative is not only a great way to raise money for student-led activities, but also provides an excellent opportunity for students to:
- Learn about sustainability and responsible waste management
- Embrace their roles as worldly, environmentally-conscious citizens
- Have a voice in how funds are used, empowering them to make meaningful decisions
The Student Council has already met to discuss how the funds will be used. Their current goal is to support the upgrade of the James Centre bike racks, making it have easier functionality and create a safe place to park their bikes and scooters. They would also like to fund some more lexiled books in the library, particularly higher levelled books and more copies of popular titles.
Thank you to our P&C for their support and to our school community for encouraging student voice, sustainability, and shared success.
Visiting International Teachers
Our school's reputation on the international stage continues to grow, with increasing interest from overseas educators. Over the next two weeks, we are proud to be hosting visiting teacher groups from both Taiwan and Japan.
These visits are a wonderful acknowledgment of the excellent teaching and learning happening every day at Broadbeach. Our international colleagues are here specifically to see how we explicitly teach to ensure students are engaged and making strong progress in their learning.
This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the high-quality work happening in our classrooms and to share ideas that benefit students—both here and abroad. We’re proud that Broadbeach is being recognised as a leader in education and excited to continue learning and growing through these valuable connections.
School Academic Data
Over the past week, our teachers have been meeting with Heads of Sub-School to ensure we are meeting the needs of every individual student. These meetings are an important part of our targeted teaching approach, allowing staff to review and analyse recent summative assessment data alongside ongoing monitoring tools and classroom observations.
By aligning this information, teachers can make informed decisions about how to best support, extend, and challenge each student in their class. It’s one of the key ways we ensure that intervention and support at Broadbeach are based on data, not guesswork.
When reviewing our whole-school data for Semester 1, we are proud to share that 93% of students achieved a passing grade in Mathematics and 92% in English. This is an outstanding result for a school of over 1200 students.
More importantly, we are equally proud of the individual growth and progress students are making every day. At Broadbeach, every learner matters, and we are committed to continuing this work to ensure every student achieves their personal best.
From the Special Education Team
Reminder: Specialist Questionnaire Requests
Just a reminder that throughout the school year, teachers may be asked to complete questionnaires such as the Vanderbilt, Conners, or ABAS to support medical or developmental assessments for students.
These forms provide valuable insights and contribute to a fuller understanding of a child’s needs. While teachers aim to complete these promptly, please allow up to two weeks for processing.
To ensure privacy and comply with Department of Education guidelines:
A Consent to Share Information form must be completed by the parent or guardian before any information is shared.
This form details:
- What information will be shared
- Who it will be shared with
- The purpose of sharing
- How long the consent is valid
- The right to withdraw consent at any time
Our Guidance Officer or Head of Special Education will assist with this process.
Please note:
Teachers are only able to complete paper-based questionnaires. Online forms or survey links cannot be used. Once completed, the school will email the form directly to the nominated specialist.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us support students while safeguarding their privacy.

Gratitude for Wellbeing
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to get caught up in stress, endless to-do lists, and everyday challenges. Taking time to practise gratitude—recognising and appreciating the good in our lives—can make a big difference. Research shows that regular expressions of gratitude are linked to increased happiness, better health, greater resilience, and stronger relationships.
Here are a few simple ways to bring more gratitude into your day. This list is not exhaustive – everyone can practise gratitude in their own personal way.
- Send a note of thanks: A quick email, text, or handwritten note to someone you appreciate can brighten their day (and yours!).
- Reflect on the positives: Each evening, take a moment to think of three good things that happened. You might jot them down, share them aloud, or just reflect quietly.
- Be present: Practise mindfulness by tuning into your surroundings. Enjoy a mindful walk, enjoy your meal without distractions, or simply take in the view from your window as if it’s the first time you’ve seen it.
- Create a family gratitude habit: Try going around the dinner table and having each person share one good thing from their day. It’s a great way to connect and focus on the positives. See below for some helpful prompts via the Wholehearted School Counsellor website!
- Capture joy: Take photos of small moments that make you smile, so you can look back and appreciate them later

Rain on the Rock by Jodi Toering
Rain on the Rock celebrates the impact of rain on Uluru and the Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Told using vivid imagery, and in harmony with Aṉangu's connection to Country, Rain on the Rock depicts the unique beauty of one of Australia’s most iconic landscapes.
Rising from the vast desert plain, Uluṟu stands as a silent witness to the passing of time. On rare days when the rain-song beats, waterfalls stream down the great rock, and life bursts forth across the land. As the water flows, creatures stir, plants bloom, and the environment comes alive, revealing the powerful cycles of nature.

Dear parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for continuing to return lost readers and library books back to us.
If your book is lost, or damaged by food/water you will receive an invoice from our finance office payable by BPoint.
Happy Reading!

NAIDOC Week Celebrations – A Wonderful Celebration of Culture
Last week, our school community came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week, recognising and honouring the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
A highlight of the week has been the incredible class art now on display in the James Centre. We warmly invite families to visit and view this creative showcase, open until the end of the week. Be sure to check out your child’s contribution, including entries in the colouring-in competition!
Throughout the week, students engaged in a variety of cultural activities and learning experiences. These rich and meaningful opportunities helped deepen their understanding of First Nations cultures and perspectives.
The celebrations concluded with a vibrant whole school event on the school oval, featuring captivating performances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance and music. It was a joyful and respectful celebration that brought our school together in the spirit of connection and appreciation.
Thank you to all who contributed to making NAIDOC Week such a memorable experience for our students.

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.

It’s helped overcome the barriers around education expenses. And it’s set them up for a brighter future.
Saver Plus is a program designed to help eligible families develop essential financial skills and build savings for education costs.
If parents commit to saving up to $50 a month for 10 months, ANZ will match their savings up to $500 for education costs, such as school uniforms, stationery, textbooks, computers.
