Community Notices
Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

We continue to have a lot to celebrate, last week Ms Scott and the school choirs brought home three gold awards from the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, more details can be found in Ms Klarenbeck’s section of this week’s newsletter. This week Miss Deb and our bands will take on the best of the Gold Coast at HOTA. NAPLAN results are finally all in and Broadbeach continues to be above the nation in all areas.
Broadbeach State School is a highly sought after school and we live in a highly sought after suburb. On Thursday I was visited by Bruce and Dan from the Mosaic group who were keen to keep the school community up to date with their new project on Mary Avenue. The current building is in the process of being taken down before construction on a new high rise begins. I will endeavour to keep families up to date on construction and road changes each newsletter. There is another building next to Mosaic’s that is scheduled to start this year and soon I will be able to update the community on our build next year. 2026 will certainly be an interesting time. The end result will be good for the school with a new three storey building, complete with new administration and classrooms.
Yongkang City Primary School
This week we welcome 16 students and 2 staff from Yongkang City Primary School. Students will spend time with our Year 5 and 6 classes getting Broadbeach experience as well as engaging in some English lessons.
Everyday Counts
As educators, and many of us, parents, we understand the complexities of daily life, including managing diverse needs of children, genuine sickness that invades the family home and the ever-increasing pressures on families. The school has a suite of supports that can assist families including our Guidance Officer, Family Connect Team, School Psychologist and connections to outside community groups.
Research and our classroom experience at Broadbeach show that even carefully structured lessons designed to maximise student success can be disrupted by absences. When students are away, they miss not only key new content but also the essential review that supports it. Many of our lessons are designed so that approximately 10% of the lesson introduces new learning, while the remaining 90% focuses on review to consolidate prior knowledge.
This means that after an absence, students often face more new learning than their classmates, making it harder to keep up and fully engage with the curriculum. Regular attendance allows students to participate fully in both new learning and structured review, building confidence, understanding, and long-term academic success.
We encourage all families to prioritise consistent attendance so every student can benefit from the carefully sequenced learning our teachers provide. Each day in the classroom is an opportunity to strengthen skills, reinforce understanding, and make progress. We also encourage families to schedule holidays outside of school dates to support their child’s learning journey.
One day off a fortnight equates to 20 days off a year, which over a child’s 13 years of schooling can be over 1 and half years lost.
School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will close on 22 August 2025. All families, school staff and students in target year levels 5 & 6 will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey has been emailed to one parent/caregiver per family. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Uniform Policy
Thank you to parents for supporting the Uniform policy. Remember that socks are all white, shoes are all black and earrings need to be gold or silver sleepers or studs.
Date Reminder
The Gold Coast Show holiday is Friday August 29 and the following Friday September 5 is a Pupil Free Day.
See you near the beach!

Parent Teacher Interviews
Our Term Three Parent Teacher Interviews are upcoming. Booking details were shared last week, so please ensure your appointment is confirmed and that you arrive on time. Punctuality helps the afternoon and evening run smoothly for everyone.
These interviews are an important opportunity for teachers and families to connect, share insights, and work together to support each child’s progress and wellbeing. With report cards recently distributed, and NAPLAN results now available for our Year 3 and Year 5 students, there is a wealth of information to discuss, celebrate, and reflect upon.
We are also marking a special milestone—our Prep students have officially reached their first 100 days of school! Their growth and enthusiasm during this foundational year have been a delight to witness, and we look forward to sharing their achievements with families.
We value these conversations as a collaborative space where we can celebrate successes, identify areas for growth, and plan next steps in each student’s learning journey. Your perspective as a parent or guardian plays a vital role in forming a complete picture of your child’s learning, so we encourage you to share your observations and ask questions. Please be mindful that all our teachers work hard to make sure that they are supporting your child and providing the best education possible. If you feel that your questions and wonderings need longer than the 10 minutes assigned, I would encourage you to make an appointment at a different mutually agreeable time with your child’s teacher.
We look forward to welcoming you next week and working in partnership to ensure the very best outcomes for all our students.

No Limits to Learning at Broadbeach
From time to time, we hear conversations in the broader Broadbeach community about students working on content and skills beyond their year-level curriculum. We can confirm—this is absolutely true! Our intervention and differentiation approach means there is no ceiling on student learning. Every child is taught at a level that is right for them, ensuring they are both challenged and engaged.
While all students at Broadbeach access and are assessed against the curriculum for their year level (unless working from an individualised plan), we recognise that some may need extra stretch while others may require focused support. When a student demonstrates strong confidence in their current learning, we provide opportunities to explore more advanced concepts. Likewise, if a student is finding an area difficult, we identify the need and provide targeted support to strengthen their skills.
A clear example of this can be seen in Year 6 mathematics. All students work through and are assessed on the Year 6 curriculum, taught explicitly to the whole class. Within these lessons, content is differentiated to meet individual needs—whether that means targeted strategies for extension or additional scaffolding for support. Alongside these lessons, our maths pathways program targets students at their own level. For example, students who need to strengthen their number fact recall (a vital building block for future maths success) receive focused intervention. At the same time, students ready for greater challenges take part in an algebra program that covers skills and concepts from Year 6 through to Year 10. We also run targeted problem-solving groups and maths extension sessions to keep every learner moving forward.
This is just one snapshot of the many examples across different year levels and learning areas. At Broadbeach, we are committed to ensuring every student progresses at the pace that’s right for them, with no unnecessary limits on their potential. Our goal is for all learners to be engaged, challenged, and confident in achieving mastery.

Speech Pathology Week 2025 – Impact Through Communication
Sunday 24 – Saturday 30 August 2025
This week is about raising awareness of communication disabilities and celebrating the people who help break down communication barriers.
Speech Pathologists in Schools
Our Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) support students with communication disorders to succeed by:
- Helping staff and peers recognise strengths
- Presuming competence
- Providing the right supports so students can reach their potential
- Everyone needs help sometimes – and that’s ok. Our role as a community is to make sure everyone gets what they need.
Home and School Partnerships
Working together makes a big difference.
Scenario | Accommodation | Skill Building |
Child struggles to tell about their school holidays | Parent sends photos and notes in a communication book | Staff teach them to create personal stories |
Child wants to join play but finds it hard | Teacher prompts peers to include them | Staff teach strategies to approach and join in |
Thank You to our Speech Language Pathologists
We’re lucky to have Lucy Robson (SLP) and Rachel Kennedy (SLP) at Broadbeach State School, guiding our understanding and supporting students, teachers, and families. Thank you for the difference you make every day!

From the Guidance Officer
Queensland Mental Health Week (4 to the 12 of October)
Mental health is important for every single one of us, yet it is a part of life that is often overlooked. Busy lives get in the way of us caring for our mental health, as does a fear of feeling vulnerable should we reveal our mental health challenges.
Queensland Mental health Week (QMHW) is an annual event that aims to improve community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing across the state. The theme for Queensland Mental Health Week 2025 is “Connect for mental health”, emphasising the proactive measures we can adopt to nurture and support positive mental health and wellbeing for ourselves and our communities.
Connect for mental health focuses on four areas:
Connect with self: Take care of yourself, do something you enjoy, make healthy choices, and seek help when needed.
Connect with community: Create supportive and inclusive environments, look after one another, and connect with culture. Show kindness and initiate connection with those who are struggling.
Connect with others: Foster relationships with loved ones, friends, family, and mob. Spend time with others and make meaningful connections.
Connect with nature: Take a break from technology, spend time outdoors, embrace mindfulness, and take care of the world around you.
Broadbeach State School will be hosting a range of activities during QMHW during break times for students to participate in that focus on the above areas which will be advertised through the student notices.
For more information about QMHW visit the Qld Mental Health Week website:

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.
