Principal’s Message

Broadbeach is truly situated in a wonderful part of the Gold Coast, just around the immediate vicinity of the school I have counted up to seven new high rise builds over the next two to three years, three are currently under construction, two are about to commence with two more currently for sale. Our school is also scheduled to build next year. Needless to say that the complexities that we face around parking could get worse before they improve. When using the Kiss and Go on Old Burleigh Road and Mary Street please keep the following in mind:
- Never park your vehicle in the zone during pick up or drop off.
- Remain in your car.
- If you need to leave your car, find a suitably marked parking space.
- Arrive on or after 3.00pm.
- Move as far forward in the zone as traffic permits (drop-off and pick-up).
- On exit, proceed to the end of the available zone before merging into traffic.
- Only “drop into” the established queue if sufficient space available to ensure your entire vehicle is adjacent to the kerb.
- Train your children how to exit and enter the vehicle quickly and safely.
- Train your children to look out for your vehicle in the afternoon.
- Arrange your vehicle so your child enters from the kerbside only.
- Never double park and call for your child to move through the queue onto the road.
- Be calm, patient and courteous.
Staffing and classes for next year
One of the biggest challenges each year is the construction and organisation of classes for the next year. To help us be as accurate as possible and minimise any changes at the start of year, please let the office know if you are moving next year and anticipating not returning to Broadbeach State School in 2026.
The staffing and class formation process has begun and continues right through until the first few weeks of the following year. Preparation and planning is designed to limit any changes and adjustments to classes.
I would like to extend an opportunity to families to inform me, in writing, of any educational considerations that you would like me to be aware of when considering your child’s placement for 2026. Where possible, we will be doing all that we can to ensure that classes are balanced in both number and educational dynamics.
With this in mind you can appreciate that it isn’t possible to request a specific teacher, expect the same teacher who may have taught a sibling in the past, or want all your child’s friends in the one class. Sometimes being best friends in the playground doesn’t always equate to industrious work habits in the classroom, and often friendship groupings change during the course of the year. Your child’s educational needs will be valued and taken into account, however the final class construction is ultimately a school decision made in consultation with this year’s teachers and members of the Leadership Team. If you would like to write a letter, please address it to the Principal and hand it into the office by 3.00pm Friday, October 31.
At this stage our teachers do not know what year level they will be teaching next year and Education Queensland’s transfer and staffing process remains active until the last day of the school year. In some cases staffing isn’t finalised until after Day 8 2026, so needless to say that all of this is a work in progress.
The allocation of classes and teachers for the school year at Broadbeach is released to parents via SMS on the Monday morning of the first day at school.
See you near the beach!

Book Week 2025 – ‘Book an Adventure’
Broadbeach State School will celebrate Book Week on Thursday 18 September.
We encourage all students to dress-up as their favourite book character. Following the theme ‘Book an Adventure’ is encouraged but not essential. To help identify the character, your child can carry the book or attach a picture of the book to their costume.
We will host a parade on the oval from 9.00 am to show-off the costumes. We invite parents and family members to come along and enjoy this fun community occasion.
Enrol your child for Prep 2026

Olympian Visit
On Thursday 4 September, we will welcome four Olympians to Broadbeach State School to speak with students in Years 4, 5 and 6. This visit is part of the Olympics Unleashed program and the Sydney 2000 25-Year Anniversary Roadshow—a special initiative involving only a select number of schools.
The event celebrates the legacy of Sydney 2000 while building excitement for Australia’s next home Games in Brisbane 2032. Students will take part in a panel discussion facilitated by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), hearing from four Olympians who have proudly represented Australia on the world stage.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to see how our Healthy Minds pillars—resilience, persistence, teamwork, confidence and organisation—are vital not only in sport, but also in life and success.

Assessment Week – Term Three
Assessment Week will take place in Week 9 (8 – 12 September). During this time, students complete the summative assessments that contribute to their end-of-term reports. As we approach the end of the current units, teachers are looking forward to seeing how students apply what they’ve learned.
It’s important to remember that Assessment Week is not designed to be stressful or high-stakes. Our students are used to regular check-ins and mastery tasks throughout the term, so these final assessments are simply another step in their learning journey.
Because of this ongoing monitoring, teachers have a clear picture of each child’s progress and are well placed to support them. That said, we know that assessments can still feel challenging for some students. With your support, we can help make the week as calm, positive and productive as possible.
To support your child during Assessment Week, we kindly ask that you:
- Prioritise attendance: Please ensure your child is at school each day. Consistent attendance helps teachers capture a true picture of their progress and ensures no assessments are missed.
- Keep routines steady: A good night’s sleep and a balanced diet are powerful tools. Maintaining healthy routines — especially in the mornings and evenings — supports focus, stamina and a calm mindset.
- Talk it through: Invite your child to share any worries or questions they may have. Reassure them that assessments are simply a chance to show what they’ve learned — not a test of their worth. A calm, encouraging home environment goes a long way.
- Stay connected: If you have any concerns or believe your child may need extra support, please contact their classroom teacher. Open communication helps us respond early and effectively.
Thank you for your continued support. By working in partnership, we can help every student approach Assessment Week with confidence and finish the term feeling proud of their progress.

Year 5/6 Deputy Principal Excursion
I have visited all Year 5 and 6 classes to promote my final Deputy Principal Reward Excursion for the year. Due to popular demand, I will be taking a select group of students to the Gold Coast SUNS for their Day in the Life program.
This experience mirrors the daily routine of SUNS AFL and AFLW players. Students will take part in a tailored education session, an on-field and gym program, and enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of People First Stadium.
To be eligible, I am looking for students who consistently demonstrate respectful and responsible behaviours, both in class and on the oval—those who are putting in their best effort to be the best version of themselves. Importantly, this is not an academic selection, nor is it based on playing AFL or being a SUNS supporter. Selection is purely about recognising students who stand out as outstanding members of our school community.
I have explained to students that while only a small number can attend due to limited spots, the real reward is for everyone. When all students strive to be their best, our school becomes a happy, vibrant place where we all want to learn and succeed. And really—what better reward could there be than that?
Year 4 2026
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the most targeted learning opportunities, we are excited to announce that we will be trialling a new online program with our Year 4 students in 2026.
This program, called Elastik, is not a replacement for our current online tools, but an addition that further strengthens the support we provide. Elastik uses recent NAPLAN data to identify individual learning gaps. For our Year 4 students, this means the program can draw on the data from their 2025 NAPLAN results and give teachers clear insights into where extra support or extension that may be needed. When these students sit the Year 5 test, we will then be able to review the program’s impact.

If successful, we plan to extend Elastik to our Year 6 cohort in future years.
Elastik works by triangulating NAPLAN data to pinpoint areas where students may be struggling and excelling, and then provides a suite of targeted activities to help close those gaps / push them on. By using live, accurate data, it allows teachers to support each child’s learning in a highly personalised way. This program will allow us to use the external standardised data from NAPLAN in an extra way to support what we already do at Broadbeach.
If your child is entering Year 4 in 2026, you will soon receive a consent form through QParents to confirm your approval for them to take part. More details will be shared closer to the time.
From the Special Education Team
Being Active in an Inclusive Environment
At Broadbeach State School we know how important it is for every child to feel supported, included, and confident when being active. Physical activity not only helps children stay healthy and build strong bodies, it also supports social skills, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.
We encourage families to explore opportunities such as the Broadbeach Abilities Soccer Program. This program is designed for children with diverse abilities, focusing on fun, teamwork, and building confidence in a safe and welcoming space.
By being active in an inclusive environment, children can:
- Develop fitness and motor skills
- Build friendships and social connections
- Grow confidence through teamwork and success
- Enjoy the fun of sport, no matter their ability
Contact Abilities Soccer Program for more information.
Together, we can support every child to be active, connected, and confident.

R U OK? DAY
Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.
A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day. By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.
So whilst R U OK? Day on Thursday September 11 is a National Day of Action, we encourage you to Ask R U OK? any day of the year because a conversation could change a life. We don't need to be an expert - just a good friend and a great listener.
Got a niggling feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it.
By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow the following conversation steps to show them they’re supported – this conversation could change or even save their life. If they are ok, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.

Information adapted from the R U Ok? Day websites.

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.
