Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

One of the nuances of working in a school environment is that life can sometimes seem to go by very fast as you live your life in 10-week busy intervals. After a great start to my time as the new Principal in Term 2, my second term, Term 3, seems to have rocketed by. As we enter the final week of the term, I would like to extend my gratitude to the staff and students who make this school an excellent place to work and learn. I would also like to thank the many parents and families who continue to smile and encourage me in my role as Principal. I particularly enjoy my time in the afternoons at the Old Burleigh Road, ‘Kiss and Go’, where I am starting to learn names of students, families and starting to recognise cars. The afternoons on Old Burleigh Road have also been particularly smooth of late, thank you to parents for following the protocols.
This week is Broadbeach State School’s Book Week. We start with the prep sports day (attempt number three), Thursday we have our dress up parade and on Friday we will be blessed by the plethora of talent at BGT (Broadie’s Got Talent). I am looking forward to all of these events.
Cybersafety
On Thursday we have organised Senior Constable Steve Baxter to run a session on Cybersafety for our Year 5 and 6 students. Keeping our students safe online is everyone’s responsibility. Senior Constable Steve Baxter will cover a range of topics from protecting your identity, password security, knowing who you are connecting with online and what to do if you need help. I have seen this presentation many times, it has very key age-appropriate messages and I am grateful that Broadbeach has been able to acquire the police services time and resources this week.
Netball Excellence – Broadbeach Barracudas
On the first weekend of the school holidays, we are sending our netball excellence team off to compete in a competition, called the Primary School’s Cup, held at the Underwood Park and Recreation Complex. A big thank you to Mrs White and Mrs Roberts for taking on this opportunity and giving up the first weekend of the holidays. Go Broadbeach! Go Barracudas!!
Leadership Team
Our leadership team will be offline at certain points on Tuesday as we start the strategic planning process for 2026.
Term 4
Term 4 will start on Tuesday October 7 after the Monday public holiday. Early in the term I should be able to provide everyone an update for the new building.
Have a safe and restful holiday, make sure you enjoy this wonderful weather.
See you near the beach!
DEPUTY PRINCIPALS
From the Deputy’s Desk – Peta White
Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this time. Being Sports Day, remember the children can dress in their house colours. We look forward to seeing parents, grandparents and significant family members ready to cheer them on and join in the fun.
Book Week 2025 – ‘Book an Adventure’
Broadbeach State School will celebrate Book Week on Thursday 18 September.
We encourage all students to dress-up as their favourite book character. Following the theme ‘Book an Adventure’ is encouraged but not essential. To help identify the character, your child can carry the book or attach a picture of the book to their costume.
We will host a parade on the oval from 9.00 am to show-off the costumes. We invite parents and family members to come along and enjoy this fun community occasion.

Book Fair
By the time you read this, our 2026 Book Fair will be underway! This year’s theme is ‘Book an Adventure’, and the library has been completely transformed to celebrate. Please note, there will be no borrowing during Week 10.
During the first three days, each class will visit the Book Fair to browse and create a wish list of books they may like to purchase. The buying of books can take place during this visit or families are invited to attend with their children to buy books during the following times:
- Wednesday and Thursday mornings: 8.00 – 8.30am
- Wednesday and Thursday afternoons: 3.00 – 3.45pm
The Book Fair will finish with a highlight—Book Character Dress-Up Day on Thursday, when students can come dressed as their favourite book character.
It promises to be an exciting week of celebrating reading!
High School – Transition for our Year 6 cohort
Over the past couple of weeks, I have visited our Year 6 classrooms to gather information about where students are planning to attend secondary school next year. I do this for two key reasons:
- To understand the broad range of destinations for our students so that I can share any relevant information from those schools in a more targeted way.
- To identify families who may not have started the enrolment process, so I can offer guidance and support.
By this stage, if your child is heading to high school in 2026, you should already have completed enrolment or be awaiting last minute program or scholarship offers before making a final decision. For families who have not yet begun this enrolment process, I encourage you to contact the school. While I cannot enrol your child or provide details for every secondary school and program, I can assist you with what steps to take and help point you in the right direction. It is extremely important this is all done soon as many secondary school’s have already held enrolment interviews.
From the initial information gathered, it is clear that our 2025 graduates are heading to a wide variety of destinations—with over 20 different high schools represented. This has become a regular trend for Broadbeach, as our students continue to be highly sought after by secondary schools, both private and public schools, across the region.
NZ Principal Visit
In Week 9, we welcomed another international touring group of principals, this time from New Zealand. Their focus was on how we maximise learning time to enhance student outcomes. They were extremely impressed with our practices and our strong commitment to maintaining high expectations for all students—academic, behavioural, and social-emotional. The group also highlighted the wide range of opportunities we provide and our attention to ensuring that every student master’s the foundations of learning, setting them up to thrive as they transition to secondary school and beyond. As a gesture of thanks, they presented us with a collection of books from their homeland, which will be added to our library for students to enjoy and borrow.
From the Special Education Team
The school holidays are a wonderful time for families to connect, explore and recharge. For families with a child who has a disability, local community run events can be a great opportunity to enjoy new experiences together in a safe and welcoming environment.
Being part of a community helps children feel included, supported and valued. It also reassures families that they are not alone—there are people and networks nearby who share the commitment to safety, inclusion and belonging. Attending these events is not only fun, but also builds confidence, friendships and stronger connections that last well beyond the holidays.
We encourage all families to take part in community activities over the break and experience the benefits of being part of a caring and safe community.

From the Guidance Officer
Screentime
Raising children in a digital age, where technology is ever-present, brings both benefits and risks for children and parents. Digital devices, such as computers, smart phones, tablets, smart TVs and gaming consoles, if used appropriately, can be a source of fun, social connection and entertainment for the whole family. They can also be important tools for learning. The challenge is to manage the amount of time children spend on screens and keep them safe online. Parents play an important role in helping children use devices responsibly and ensuring they have chances to take part in a range of activities that are vital for their development.
Current recommendations from Qld Health regarding screen time are:
- Children aged 5–17 years: No more than two hours of screen time daily
- Children aged 2–5 years: No more than one hour of screen time daily
- Children under 2: No screen time recommended
The following are some tips to help prevent problems with screentime:
- Be a good role model by managing your own screen use
- Be a technology smart parent by being aware of what apps your child is using, whether they are age appropriate and safe, and what content they are likely to see
- Be conscious of child safety by not using screens yourself when alertness and adult supervision of children is needed
- Put away devices at mealtimes to ensure children are focusing on their eating and engaging in social conversations and manners
- Discourage screen use at bedtime – it is recommended that children do not look at screens for at least 1 hour before bedtime. Consider turning off the home Wi-Fi network when your child has gone to bed to prevent use of screens when they are meant to be going to sleep and keep recharge devices over night outside of bedrooms
- Have digital-free areas and time – ‘No-go’ zones for screens should include family conversations and activities, and transitions times such as getting read for school. Decide if devices should be used in bedrooms so you can supervise what your child is doing
- Be aware of age restrictions for social media and ensure you are enforcing them. As of December 2025, it's national law that children must be 16 or older to have accounts on specified social media platforms
Managing ongoing healthy screentime habits can be challenging however implementing consistent boundaries and educating our children early on can avoid difficulties in the future.

Merrimac State High School

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.

Are You a Parent of a Child Between 0 to 12 Years Old?
Researchers from the University of Southern Queensland and The University of Queensland, are conducting research into parents’ opinions about parenting and climate change.
