Community Notices
Broadbeach State School students and staff acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and work, the Kombumerri Peoples. We extend that Acknowledgement to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that this country on which we meet has been a place of learning for tens of thousands of years, and we thank them for allowing us to work together, share knowledge and walk alongside them in the education of our Jarjums.
Principal’s Message

Communicating with the school
Last week the State Government released communication guidelines for schools and parents. The underlining premise is that the school and the Education Department value open and respectful communication with parents and carers to support student learning. The guidelines are attached to the newsletter this week, of particular note:
- Non urgent inquiries may take a minimum of 2 or more business days to respond.
- Staff are not to return calls or reply to emails outside standard business hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Meetings with staff during the school day must be by appointment.
I welcome the State Governments lead in this space. You are unable to visit a doctor, other health professionals, lawyers and most other professional bodies without a prior appointment and indeed many will charge a fee for late cancelations, for some reason education has been allowed to operate differently. These changes will not hinder our school’s commitment to supporting the education of our students and supporting parents and families.
Under 8’s Day
A big thank you to Ms Klarenbeck, the P to 2 team and the many other helpers who assembled a great Under 8’s day. The sun was shining, the salt air fresh and a cool breeze blowing across the sports ground made for an excellent day all round.
Under 8’s is one of my favourite days of the year. A time to celebrate being little with all the opportunities ahead and a sense of just having fun. It was great to see so many parents wondering around with their children, this afforded me an opportunity to meet more members of our wonderful community.
On Wednesday Mr Bill Garnett, Principal of Peak School in Hong Kong, came to visit Broadbeach. He was interested in how we support our students across all stages of their education journey. Thank you to Mr O’Brien for taking time out of his schedule to show Mr Garnett around the school.
School Social Media
The P&C have their Instagram and Facebook pages up and running. Please like and follow these pages for updates to key events, ways to be involved with the school, fundraising opportunities and photos celebrating the school’s achievements. After discussions at P&C the decision was made to only have the one Facebook and Instagram social media accounts run by the P&C, this provides us with one place to promote the school. Please be aware that photos of children and adults need P&C permission, this is separate to the permissions required by the school. A big thank you to Dani for your commitment to the P&C and the promotion of the school.
Have a great week,
See you near the beach!

Year 6 to Year 7: Planning for Success
As we reach the midpoint of the year, it's time to focus on and continue preparing our Year 6 students for their transition to high school. While the move is still over six months away, as we continue to communicate, early preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and successful start.
At Broadbeach, we support our students academically, socially, and emotionally to get them ready for this important change. In the coming weeks, I’ll be visiting all Year 6 classes to gather information about which high schools students are considering. Some may be deciding between a few options, particularly if awaiting results for special programs or scholarships.
This information helps us pass on relevant updates from high schools and identify students who may need further support with their decision.
A reminder that parents and carers are responsible for enrolling their child in high school. If you haven’t already, now is the time to start finalising your plans.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out.
Our Teacher Aides - Focused on Student Learning
Our teacher aides play a vital role in supporting student learning every day. Rather than focusing on general tasks like at some schools, they work directly with students – in class, in small groups, or one-on-one – especially in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy.
They follow a range of targeted programs and receive training and guidance from our Support Program Coordinator, Di Joske, and the Heads of Subschool team. Their contribution is highly valued and makes a real difference.
We ask our school community to join us in recognising and celebrating our teacher aides – a warm smile or a kind word goes a long way. They definitely provide an extra edge to what we do!
From the Special Education Team
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) is an annual collection of information about Australian school students with disability. It gathers data about students receiving educational adjustments due to disability, in a consistent, reliable, and systematic way across Australia.
The purpose of the NCCD is to help schools, education departments, and governments better understand the needs of students with disability and how to best support their learning and participation at school.
If you are a parent, guardian, or carer of a child with disability who requires ongoing adjustments at school, a teacher or another staff member will work with you to understand your child’s needs. This collaborative approach ensures that the most appropriate adjustments are made to support your child’s learning experience.
In some cases, an individual Personal Learning Plan (PLP) may be developed to set specific educational goals and track your child’s progress over time.
For more information, visit: https://www.nccd.edu.au/for-parents-guardians-and-carers
Please find information from Mr Josey about Broadbeach State School’s upcoming NCCD Collection

CON-EXT
CON-EXT is an anxiety treatment study for 7 – 12 year olds. This study (CON-EXT) will determine whether our CON-EXT computer task can predict treatment outcomes for anxious children based on their treatment response style. Anxiety is defined as feelings of nervousness, worry and fear that is usually brought on by seeing or experiencing certain triggers or events, and/or by the expectation that this is too frightening or difficult to cope with. Anxiety can be helpful when dealing with new challenges and novel situations. However, if it occurs too often or too strongly, it can lead to children not coping in many situations. For many children and their parents, anxiety can be highly disruptive and prevent children from doing things that other children their age can do.

Griffith University - What helps and hinders school attendance?
A team of researchers from Griffith University are interested in understanding what helps and hinders young people in attending and participating in school.
We know that non-attendance is higher for autistic students than non-autistic students, with previous research suggesting that autistic children, on average, miss a third of their schooling. It’s important that we begin to find out what helps and hinders autistic young people in attending school, so we can begin to provide supports and interventions to students who wish to attend school but can’t.
We have previously interviewed members of the Australian autism community, including teachers, autistic adults and parents of autistic young people, who support autistic students who are experiencing school non-attendance. Now we need to hear from autistic young people about what makes it hard for them to get to school and compare this to otherwise neurodivergent children, and also neurotypical children.

Are You a Parent of a Child Between 0 to 12 Years Old?
Researchers from the University of Southern Queensland and The University of Queensland, are conducting research into parents’ opinions about parenting and climate change.
If you are a parent (18+ years) of a child aged 0 to 12 years and live in Australia, we would love to hear your views. You will need to complete a short online survey. To find out more or to participate, please visit https://tinyurl.com/4e3mmrjc
